A valid, installed copy of the game is the essential foundation for all reverse-engineering work. Asset extraction, texture dumps, and compiled script analysis all require access to the game files on disk.

Asset Exploration & Viewing Tools

OpenIV

FreeDiscontinued (2021)

OpenIV is the classic archive explorer and asset modification tool for Rockstar's RAGE engine. It lets you browse and manage proprietary .rpf archive files — the packed containers that hold all game textures, models, scripts, and data. You can extract raw texture files (.ytd), preview 3D drawable models (.ydr, .ydd), inspect metadata and file hierarchies, and replace assets directly for modding.

It supports GTA IV, GTA V, Max Payne 3, and RDR2. OpenIV also introduced the .oiv package format for distributing mods safely, and the “mods folder” approach that keeps vanilla game files untouched. Development was officially halted in Summer 2021. It remains fully functional for existing game builds but receives no further updates.

CodeX

Paid (Patreon)Active Development

CodeX is a 3D map exploration and research suite built specifically for Red Dead Redemption 2, developed by dexyfex — who also created GTA V's popular CodeWalker tool. CodeX provides an interactive free-roam camera that lets you fly through the entire RDR2 game world, click on any object, prop, or entity to inspect its metadata, file hash, coordinates, and asset references.

Key features include a full 3D model viewer with rotation and zoom, a hash resolution engine that maps cryptic asset hashes to human-readable names, an interactive world map with searchable points of interest, and coordinate extraction tools used by RedM modders for custom props and MLOs. It integrates with Blender (via Sollumz) for a full mod creation pipeline.

Patreon-Gated Access

CodeX is distributed exclusively through dexyfex's Patreon. A minimum subscription of €4.50 + VAT per month is required to access builds. Updates, support, and the latest releases are posted in the Patreon-linked Discord server.
